Orientation activities held to greet newcomers to FLASS

Around 200 senior-year admission students attend the faculty-based orientation reception on 4 August, 2023.

Dr Prudence Lau Leung-kwok, Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS, encourages senior-year entry students to seek help from their academic advisors when they encounter any obstacles throughout their learning journey.

In conjunction with the Student Affairs Office, Global Affairs Office, Centre for Language in Education and the Library, FLASS held a faculty-based orientation reception for around 200 senior-year entry and top-up degree students on 4 August, 2023. Separately, the faculty organised a programme-based orientation activity for the first-year entry cohort on 15 August.

The faculty-based reception began with a pre-recorded welcome speech by Dean of FLASS Professor Li Wai-keung. He told all newcomers that university education is not just about acquiring new knowledge and practical skills for their future career, but is also an occasion for them to meet new people and challenge their old ways of thinking. The Dean urged new students to take on new challenges, and to forge fond memories that will last a lifetime.

Following Professor Li’s speech, the new students were briefed by Dr Prudence Lau Leung-kwok, Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Studies and Student Learning) of FLASS and Assistant Professor from the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (CCA), about the faculty’s organisational structure and the academic focuses of its five departments. She explained the academic advisor system for the first year of study, the programme-based internship arrangement, the credit transfer system for senior-year students who plan to take one elective course at a master’s degree level during their studies, and the career prospects of various programmes.

Representatives from the Centre for Language in Education and Library introduced language learning resources and library facilities students can use to support their studies. Staff members from the Student Affairs Office and Global Affairs Office also gave attending students a snapshot of the activities organised by the University and campus life. After the main introduction, the programme leaders gave individual introductory talks for their students.

Dr David Chan Tse-tin, Assistant Professor from the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology, informs students of the core and elective courses they may consider taking in the years to come.

Students attend a briefing about the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Integrated Environmental Management programme. The programme arranges many field work opportunities for its students to learn about different natural habitats in Hong Kong.

The campus bustles with newcomers who ponder over which student associations to join.

Purple-clad executive members of MUSASSO, CCA’s student music association, are on the lookout for new members.

On 15 August, 13 undergraduate programmes open to first-year admissions arranged individual briefing sessions for the 2023/24 cohort of students. In them, programme leaders briefed students on the curriculum design, internship opportunities and career prospects of their respective programmes. The New Student Orientation Days were held on the following days of 16 and 17 August, where different student organisations arranged a wide range of activities to welcome newcomers to the university.

Amidst these orientation activities, EdUHK bustled with many new faces walking around the lush campus as they familiarised themselves with the school’s facilities and grabbed some food or a drink at the canteen. The excitement in the air was palpable as the students looked forward to starting their life on campus in September for the 2023/24 academic year.
